A now familiar red Jeep is in my driveway when I pull up. Bailey barely lets me get it in park before she throws open the passenger seat where the abandoned siblings rest in a clean shirt. I grabbed from my gear bag before I placed them in on the seat.

“Did you touch them?” she questions in a tone I’ve listened to her use when working in dispatch.

Getting out of the truck and joining her on the passenger side, I reply, “With gloves.” She scoops them up carefully, using the t-shirt as a barrier between them and her bare skin.

“Good.” Quickly I follow her as she moves towards my house. “Grab the carrier.” Her direction leaves no room for question. Obviously, I’ve seen my share of emergency situations. Witnessing her assess and take charge of the situation is sexy as hell. This isn’t her problem. Her father’s warning rings through my ears.

“What now?” I ask, as Bailey gently places the bundle on my kitchen counter.

“We need to get them fed and warm.” I’ve never been so relieved for someone to use the word we. Motioning for the carrier in my hand. I place it on the counter. Opening the door, she removes several items including a box of gloves. “Put these on and mix one scoop of this with two scoops of warm water in a shaker cup if you have one.” She hands me the box after taking a pair of gloves for herself.

I can’t help but focus all my attention on her as she picks up one of the kittens for the first time, softly talking to it. She doesn’t have on a stitch of makeup and her hair is up in a simple ponytail. She’s beautiful. “Jude, go,” she prompts without taking her eyes off the hungry kitty.

“Yeah, right.” I gulp down as I spring into action. Following her directions, I quickly return with a shaker bottle holding the mixed formula while she examines the second furball. “Now what?” I don’t have a lot of experience with pets. We never had them when I was a kid, but I can follow directions. It’s a crucial part of being an effective first responder.

“We’ll weigh them next time we feed them. For now, I need you to fill the syringes with the formula and grab some towels.” Right. I had no idea this would be so complicated. Unwilling to show her how out of my comfort zone I am, I fumble with filling the tiny syringes while Bailey pulls a wet wipe out of a container and begins to rub the bottom of the kitten she holds. Sensing my question, she answers. “They need to pee and poop first.” Seemingly satisfied, she wraps the first one in a towel I grabbed and hands it to me before repeating the process with the second.

“Never feed them with their belly facing up,” Bailey warns, as she hands me one of the waiting syringes. I repeat her instructions in my head. “Use your finger under her chin to make sure she’s swallowing and tilt the syringe up.
